5. This Was Hinsdale (Pillars)

Pillars

"The Pillars" have added quiet dignity to Maple Street (Rte 143) overlooking Buttermilk Road since 1836. This imposing white home was built by Ichabod Emmons for his son Monroe.

Their forefather Thomas Emons, a shoemaker from England "did not arrive in the good ship Mayflower in 1620 (that) is well established; therefore his descendants are saved from an inordinate self-esteem and a feeling of superiority over their fellow mortals."*

Maj. Ichabod Emmons moved to Hinsdale (from Middlefield, MA). Once, asked why his son Monroe should be retained as Hinsdale's Postmaster, he replied, "because there is only one Democrat in town, and he cannot write his own name."

The Emmons House, as it is familiarly known, "...was probably the finest residence in town and today (1905) has a certain stateliness of the olden time that our more modern dwellings have not."*
