The Select Board in a municipality in Massachusetts acts as its Chief Executive Officers. In Hinsdale, the board consists of three members, each elected for a three-year term. In addition, Select Board members have general supervision over all matters that are not specifically delegated by law or by vote of the town to some other officer or board. All Select Boards in Massachusetts have at least four important powers under state law: the power to sign warrants for the payment of all town bills; the power to make appointments to town office; the power to hire professional administrative assistance and town counsel; and the power to prepare the town meeting warrant. The Select Board's duties include appointing the Town Administrator, Police Chief and other town employees and many committee members, considering long-term plans, developing goals and policies, issuing certain licenses and permits.
