Select Board

Overview

The Select Board in Massachusetts acts as its Chief Executive Officers. In Hinsdale, the board consists of three members, each elected for a three-year term. In addition, Select Board members have general supervision over all matters that are not specifically delegated by law or by a town's vote to some other officer or board.

All Select Boards in Massachusetts have at least four important powers under state law: the power to sign warrants for the payment of all town bills; the power to make appointments to town office; the power to hire professional administrative assistance and town counsel; and the power to prepare the town meeting warrant.

The Select Board's duties include appointing the Town Administrator, Police Chief, other town employees, and many committee members, considering long-term plans, developing goals and policies, issuing certain licenses and permits.
